There are two popular schools of thought when it comes to writing fiction. One says an author should write about what they know. The other suggests you write about a subject you want to learn more about. I can't argue with either, except maybe when it comes to horse fiction. I don't think horses are a subject that can just be researched on paper and put into play in a story. The author needs to live it. He or she needs to actually experience horses to bring them to life. And I'm not just talking about standing on the rail at a racetrack and watching the horses gallop by. Sitting in the stands eavesdropping and taking notes at a horse show won't suffice either. Common pitfalls for the non-horseperson...

Did you ever daydream that you could use horse stall mats and improve your life? Plenty of people have already done that. Most never get past the daydream stage. Many lacked the will to look into, learn and then get going, so are even now just dreaming. Let's just hold on here now. We looked at plenty of negatives at the start of this, all the why nots. Let's consider three reasons why you should use horse stall mats. Firstly, on the positive side, allow me to point out that rubber mats protect your horses feet and prevent lameness and injury.. O.K., I hear your objection, that one piece horse stall mats are a pain to lay in stalls and to move around. It's a valid objection, I agree. However, let me...

Horse Heaven Jane Smiley In ‘Horse Heaven' the universe of horse racing is woven into a marvellous tapestry of joy and love, chicanery, folly, greed and reckless courage. Spanning two years on the circuit, from Kentucky and California to New York and Paris, Jane Smiley's wonderful novel puts us among trainers and track brats, horse-obsessed girls, nervy jockeys, billionaire breeders and restless track wives. "The world of horse-racing has never been portrayed to such spellbinding effect." That quote from the ‘Tatler' review illustrates the depth and breadth of this fascinating novel and explains why it is regarded as one of the great horse books of all time. When a horse spooks or shies he is dangerous not only to himself and his rider, but also to others, this is especially so if the horse is ridden on roadsides. Horses, being prey animals, often respond to objects they perceive as being threatening by shying and bolting from them. Some horses shy at virtually anything and they are often deemed as problem horses that are dangerous to ride. Horses can spook from everything, from plastic bags to wheelie bins, if the horse finds the object scary, he will everything in his power to avoid it. There are some things you can do to desensitize your horse. This problem horse training is ideally started when the horse is young and in training as it will ensure a...

While it might seem that grooming a horse is purely cosmetic, its in fact a necessary part of the horse's care. By caring for your horse's coat, you not only make him look better, but make him feel better too. Spending time with him while grooming can also be a wonderful method to bond using your horse, letting you get to know him in the mutually enjoyable setting. For basic grooming you may need several various kinds of brushes. The following are some of the most common brushes: Curry comb - a plastic or rubber brush with raised bumps on one side plus a strap or loop on the back to hold your hand in Hard brush - a wooden or plastic backed brush with bristles which are hard to the touch and not...

The biggest mistake most people do when their horse bolts is to try to stop him; they tense up, tug at the reins and in doing so become more likely to fall off. The more tense you are on a horse, the easier it is to fall off. The first thing you should do when your horse bolts is to focus on staying on. Unfortunately many riders panic when their horse bolts and they try various ways to stop the runaway horse. One of these methods is to force the horse into a tight circle, but by doing this you compromise the horse's ability to see where it's going and you risk driving him into an obstacle. Pulling a horse's head to one side when he's bolting will also unbalance the horse which could result in him...

In the spring we begin the process of starting the 3 year old horses under saddle. Last year they began learning about working on a lunge line, a little bit of long lining, and free jumping. During the winter months we did not work with them, they had a break to go outside and continue growing and just be a horse. Now they will start coming in again to have a refresher course and then a 1 week "boot camp" of 20-30 minute sessions. Each day will start on the lunge line or with long lines. On the lunge they will start going with a saddle on their back and we will start letting the stirrups loose to flap around on their sides. They are wearing a bridle now and we will start using a "neck stretcher" to...

The rocking horse and its larger cousin, the carousel horse have been entertaining children (and adults) for ages. Some sources say that the rocking horse first made its appearance in the 17th century, possibly as a tool to begin to teach young children how to ride. It wasn't until two centuries later, during the Victorian era, that rocking horses became the toy of young aristocrats. Others theorize that the concept of the rocking horse began much earlier and during the Middle Ages. Knights in training would often construct horses to practice jousting and other skills. Of course, the children of that era would want to emulate their heroes on horseback, and it's possible that smaller versions of the...

Children absolutely love rocking toys, especially wooden rocking horses! And, I don't blame them one bit! Rocking horses have been enchanting both the young and the young at heart since the 17th century. A rocking horse is a captivating toy, a beautiful addition to any room, and a future heirloom. Rocking horses are also an excellent heirloom. We were privileged to have no ordinary rocking-horse. Ours was a rocking horse with wheels! I really think that they are the best! I still have photos of my sister and myself both rocking and pushing it along. In fact my parents could not stop me pushing it in order to get a picture of me, so you see they found a boulder and set in front of the front wheels...

Unfortunately lameness in horses is part and parcel of horse ownership, at some point in the horse's life he or she will, most probably, be lame.  As part of good horse care, horse owners and riders should familiarise themselves with the signs and symptoms of equine lameness and be able to decide whether the lameness is likely to be hoof or leg related, or could be attributed to the horse's back.  Any lame horse should always be seen by a Veterinary Surgeon in the first instance, as some limb lamenesses can manifest themselves as a back problem and vice versa.  Although the attending Veterinary Surgeon should consider all the signs and symptoms, diagnose the problem and prescribe the correct...

There are some horses that do not like to stand to be washed or actually seem to be scared of the hose or wet sponge. This does not have to mean that your horse never gets bathed. With a little patience, a few clever tricks and understanding any horse can be taught to stand still and be bathed. Behaviour specialists have recommended setting some time aside in order to begin re-establish good behaviour when bathing / being washed down. Setting time aside will prevent you from wanting to rush through the process and make the experience as relaxing as it can be for the horse. It is recommended that any time spent working with horses in this way be done on a soft, non-slippy surface and with the handler...

If you have a mare that is due to foal and you have decided to use a foaling stall, then there are some important considerations that you must acknowledge prior to the event of foaling down indoors. Nature has always allowed mares to foal outside in a place where the mare felt most secure and was able to give birth without any predators to contend with. Nowadays, we tend to manage the birthing of horses and therefore the foaling stall is something that has become common practice with many horse breeders. One of the biggest considerations is the room that you are able to offer the mare. The stall should be approximately twice the size of a regular stall - at least. Ideally your stall measurements...

For many horse owners and riders, equine insurance can be an easy area to overlook. It is pushed to the bottom of the pile and considered an unnecessary expense. There is a certain amount of apathy amongst some individuals with them assuming that 'it will never happen to me.' Unfortunately, accidents do happen, often when its least expected and the resulting cost can be enough to put an owner into financial jeopardy. In some cases, the horse or pony involved might have to be put down, simply because the owner can't afford to pay out for the level of veterinary care required. It is also important to remember that it is not just the safety and welfare of the horse that needs to be considered. Equines...

There is a lot of confusion regarding horse racing handicapping and how to use handily works and breezing works. First, let's set the record straight. A handily or in hand work means the horse was going easily and didn't need much urging. A horse that works handily or in hand is one that is full of run and wants to run. A horse that is breezing is being urged to move faster by the rider. Of the two workouts, the H is more impressive because it usually means a horse is full of run. But before you go betting every horse that shows an H work, be careful. Most clockers give the H work tag to most works. Only when there is a good reason to note a horse was really being pushed or there was some other...

While some riders have an internal sense of balance on their horse and seem to move in harmony no matter what happens, other riders can ride for years without ever really moving in unity with the motion of their horse. Good riders find the way to follow the horse's movement much in the same way a baby learns to walk, through experimentation with their environment. While for most babies adapting to the environment and learning to walk is relatively easy, for most riders it is not--a rider needs to overcome natural instincts to tense up on the unstable surface of a horse's back and learn to adapt to the horse's movement. Most riding instruction is based on mechanical instructions for riding...

You are aiming to be inspired by the equestrian look and a suitable bodice, and trousers/pants may be sufficient as well as the boots. The fabric/design of the bodice is important.
